UNOH Optimist Club Adopts a Family for Christmas
The University of Northwestern Ohio Optimist Club has adopted a family in need for Christmas from the Salvation Army. The family of six, whose father is disabled, is struggling to pay bills, desperately needs assistance with groceries, and wishes for Christmas gifts for the four children.
The Optimist Club has been able to raise some of the funds needed to make this project a success by working the concession stand at the home UNOH athletic games. However, the club is also accepting donations to further help this family. In order for the Optimist Club to avoid purchasing duplicate items, they are asking that any non-perishable foods, gifts or monetary donations be turned in by December 15th, which will allow time for the club members to shop for remaining items and wrap all the gifts. A list of needs was provided by the Salvation Army for each of the family members.
The Club’s goal is to help ease the financial burden on this family, offer assistance by supplying groceries and provide Christmas gifts for the four children. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Ginny Duncan, UNOH Optimist Club Advisor, at 419-998-8882.
UNOH Receives Champion of Character Institutional Award
The University of Northwestern Ohio was recently selected by the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Character Committee and the National Office as a 2008-2009 NAIA Champions of Character Institution.
According to the NAIA Vice President for Champions of Character, Rob Haworth, the Champions of Character program message has continued to grow and impact people throughout our nation as a result of the passion and commitment of NAIA member institutions such as the University of Northwestern Ohio.
The NAIA Champions of Character program will create an environment in which every NAIA Student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through the five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

Cadet Nicholas I. Kennedy, from Lima, Ohio, will be commissioned on December 12, 2009, at 12:00 p.m. at the UNOH Event Center. Cadet Kennedy, who is the first to be commissioned at the University of Northwestern Ohio’s ROTC Program, graduated from UNOH with a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Administration and was in the top 9% in the nation of the ROTC program. He is being commissioned to the rank 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. ARMY and will be leaving within the next 30 days to attend Aviation School in Ft. Rucker, Alabama. The Ceremony will include the pinning of the 2Lt Bars, the Officers First Salute, and the Presentation of the Commissioning Certificate.
The Commissioning Ceremony recognizes the successful completion of years of training, entry into the Profession of Arms, and though the oath of office the agreement to faithfully protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
The University of Northwestern Ohio entered into an agreement with the U.S. Army and Bowling Green State University in 2008 to provide access to ROTC programs to UNOH students. As a result of the partnership, UNOH students may take Army ROTC for a semester, 1 year, 2 years, or all 4 years. The ROTC courses must be taken on the Bowling Green State University campus in Bowling Green, Ohio, once a week.
Army ROTC is one of the Nation's top leadership programs, with many benefits to joining. Through Army ROTC you can:
• Get help with your college tuition with an Army ROTC scholarship
• Gain experience you can't find anywhere else
• Gain the respect of your peers and future employers
• Train to become a leader and manager
Army ROTC is an elective that students take along with their required college classes that teaches them the skills needed for a successful career. Students combine classroom time with hands-on experiences and learn leadership and management skills. Because it’s an elective, students can try it out for their freshman and sophomore years without incurring any obligation to serve in the military.
If students decide they are up to the challenge of leading in the world’s best armed forces, they continue on to the advanced courses of Army ROTC while completing their degree. During the summer between the junior and senior years, students will attend Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC), which will give them hands-on training and the confidence they can’t learn in a classroom. It is a four-week summer course to evaluate and train all Army ROTC Cadets. Students will have a normal college student experience like everyone else on campus, but at graduation they are commissioned as a Second Lieutenant to serve on active duty or with the Army Reserves or National Guard.
Army ROTC has scholarships available. Scholarships are awarded based on a student’s merit and grades, not financial need. Students compete each year for scholarships that pay all tuition, most fees and an annual $1,200 book fee. Army ROTC scholarships also provide monthly living allowances for each school year for Cadets enrolled in the Army ROTC.

The University of Northwestern Ohio is sponsoring the Allen Lima Youth Leadership Educational Session on Friday, December 4, 2009, in the UNOH High Performance 600 Building on Hartzler Road. The Session runs from
8:00 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. and the focus concentrates on the importance of Understanding Self/Leadership Styles.
Lecture sessions throughout the day include Dare Communication Styles, Characteristics of a Good Leader, Leadership Styles, and Cascades Survival Exercises.
From 12:15 to l: 00 p.m. the UNOH College of Business’ Multimedia Instructional Committee (MIC) committee will present the following:
Professor Angie Bogart will highlight the university’s Virtual College platform, Professor Lynn Lease will demonstrate Virtual Second Life, and Professor Matt Goodwin will showcase the use of clicker technology within the classroom setting.
The Allen/Lima Youth Leadership program is a county and city wide youth leadership program for a maximum of 40 high school sophomores and juniors. The All-Youth Leadership program actively involves, educates and challenges youth to reach their fullest potential. The training sessions, which meet approximately every other month, provide the youth with unique opportunities to learn more about their community.

Paul Harrop, UNOH student from Exton, Pennsylvania, was chosen as the Snap-On 110% Award Winner this session at the University of Northwestern Ohio’s College of Technologies. Harrop is enrolled in AG Diesel and has been doubling up on all his classes for the past six sessions. He is the President of the UNOH FFA Collegiate Chapter, assisted with the Tractor Trouble Shooting Contest and also helps out at UNOH Open Houses. He has attended the past two year’s FFA Conventions, the Farm Science Review and the Indiana Farm Show.
Christopher Marker, the UNOH Auto/Diesel Instructor that nominated Harrop to win the award, said, “Paul is a great student of ours, and I am thrilled to see him win the award. He is one of our top students, always goes above and beyond on everything we ask of him in class, and always has a positive attitude. UNOH is very proud to have students like Paul.”
The 110% Award is sponsored by Snap-On Tools at the University of Northwestern Ohio. Each session, nominations are turned into the Deans by the University’s College of Technologies’ instructors. The Winner each session is then chosen by the Division Heads with determining factors being grade point average, outstanding performance and attendance. Dale Stahl, Snap-On representative for UNOH, presents each winner of the 110% Award with a Snap-On Jacket and Tool Set valued at over $250.
